A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the medication explain a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle management.
